There are 10 grams of iron in a sealed container with moist air. The sealed container with iron and moist air weighs a total of 15 grams. Which of the following statements is true after the iron rusts?

A) There is not enough information to answer this question

B) The rust and sealed container will weigh more because rust weighs more than iron

C) The sealed container and its contents will still weigh 15 grams

D) There will be 10 grams of ruse if all the iron rusts.

Help? I don't understand at all.

  1. Well, it's a sealed container, so you know the mass won't change. That immediately tells you that B is false and that C is true.

    D is false because if all the iron were to rust, the rust would have 10g iron in it but also some added mass from the oxygen.

    A is false because there was enough information to determine whether each of the other answers was true or false.

  3. first of all not all of the iron will rust just the surface that's exposed to air and a logical answer would be C.

  4. They are basically asking you about the conservation of matter. Since the bag is sealed and matter cannot be created or destroyed it will still have the same mass of contents regardless of the form.

    so in short the answer is C

  5. its c, according to the las of conservation of mass, the amount of mass inside a closed system will always remain constant, for exapmle, if you could way the earth, 400 years form now, it will be the same as it is now
