I am going to put my car up for sale. The year of the car is 2000. I am going to sell "as is". I was thinking about taking it to a mechanic to give it a good check out, but my brother said i should let the people who look at it take it to their own mechanic. which one should i do? thanks!!

  1. If you know about something being in need of repair, I would have it fixed before you put it on the market.  Just a good practice to show you really cared for the car.

The general practice is for the buyer to pay for having the vehicle checked out for any needed repairs.

If the oil needs to be changed, do it.  Same for the transmission fluid if an automatic.  How is the radiator fluidl Is it the right color, usually lime  green,  Some are orange. Depends on the car manuf.

  2. Go to your mechanic, even if it costs $40 or $50.  Then you'll know what you've got.  If a safety is within another $300, sell it certified for much more, another $500 to $700.

  3. Have the car serviced before putting in on the market.  Get the fluids changed, belts (if needed) check the brakes, tires and everything else.

Of course there is no guarantee that it won't break down but you can lower the odds a lot by servicing the car.

It also looks great when you advertise a car that has been well maintained.

Get it professionally detailed too. Make it look brand new. A clean car sells 100 times easier than a dirty one.
