In a 5-1, when the setter is in the #6 position, he'll stand just behind the #3 position when receiving serve. Is it ok for him to be a step or two in front of players in the #2 and #4 positions...or, must the setter start behind all the front row players?

In other words, when the setter is in any of the back row positions, must he always be standing behind every one of the front row players prior to serve...before making his way to the net to set?

  1. The answer is yes.

#6 would only relate to #3 regarding the starting position corresponding to "front row players", it doesn't matter whether #6 is in front of players in #2 and #4.

  2. Yes this is all true,

I will add by saying that stepping closer to the number two spot will give your middle hitter more room to get back for an approach with out being in your way.

Communicate with your middle hitter about what way he likes to go untill you are both comfortable with each other.

  3. yes. the setter can be in front of the 2 and 4 positions. the setter just has to be behind the 3, to the left of the 1 and the right of the 5 position.
