Question:

Question about setting in volleyball?

I have been having some trouble learning to set the ball in volleyball - I have bent my thumb back several times while trying to set it. So I think that I might be hitting the ball at the wrong height, or not absorbing the force of the ball in the right way. So, can someone tell me at what height you're supposed to set the ball? Also, if anyone has any idea on why my thumb is getting bent back when I set the ball, I would really appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

  1. your hands should be in a ball shape and your thumbs should be pointing down at the opposite eyebrow when you set. you set the ball at your forehead height. and then when you release the ball your hands should extend all the way out with your fingers pointing at the ball. kind of like superman. remember to keep your fingers strong and not limp. also when you set you have to be directly under the ball. sorry i dont know what you mean when you say your thumb is bent back..... i hope that helped!

  2. You're a setter so it's really really important that you give a nice and HIGH ball to the hitter. Before the hitter approaches the ball, she will do a "left right left jump" motion (when the SET is good) which is like a 1.5second ~ 2seconds. You kind of have to practice with the key hitters of the team so that you get a feel of each other's playing style. After the LRLJ, the ball should be around her arm reached height. I say about 2ft above from the top of the net is perfect. To set the ball high, make sure your elbows are bent before you touch the ball, then PUSH the ball UP and high. It's best to practice with another setter in your team. Just keep setting back and forth and you'll get it!

  3. you needs the normal height  when u are spiking the ball keep the fingers straight and stiff so ur thumb cannot be fold

  4. On a set, you're not supposed to "hit" the ball, but rather direct the ball, setting it up for a kill shot. With elbows OUT and fingers spread like you're squeezing a melon, you momentarily cradle the ball in both hands and direct it to a height about 4 feet above the top of the net. A lot depends on your spiker's vertical leap.

Be careful while cradling the ball not to carry it, as that is a foul.

Message me if this isn't clear.

Don't try to kill the ball on the set; this might be your thumb problem.

Guide it to the height you and your spiker have practiced.

    Good luck, B the M.

  5. hold your hands up and hit it wih your finger tips not your palms.

  6. simple trick to setting-

    bend knees

    keep arms bent

make a triangle with your fingers and thumbs and try to "cup" the ball

push the ball with your arms and fingers--not all, just thumbs and first 2 or 3 fingers

and square up to your target

    always set above your chest

    most importantly-KEEP PRACTICING!

    good LUCK!
