Question about sewing machine repair?

Grr. I'm so mad! I currently own a Singer 834 and the top thread isn't catching the bottom thread. After doing all i know how to do (cleaning around bobbin, replacing needle, checking to see if needing isn't going down far enough) It still won't work. I suspect its whatever that loop thing that goes around in a counter clockwise motion...broke.

can i fix this myself (i can't say i'm super familiar with the inner workings of the machine itself)? do i need to take it into a shop?....if so....how much will it cost? (ballpark figure)

  1. I know this sound crazy but it could be the thread.   Make sure you have the same thread in your bobbin that is on your spool.  And I'm sure you checked to make sure the thread is comming out of the bobbin in the right direction?  I have had the same problem but can't for the life of me remember how I fixed it.  As far as the repair man.  Check local fabric shops.  They usually have the name of someone that works out of their home.  My guy does a great job and only charges $40 plus parts and cleans it too.  Good luck.

  2. Aother suggestion is to make sure the needle is in properly.  If it's backwards this could cause the problem, too.
