Question about sister who is bipolar?

I have a younger sister who was diagnosed w/ bipolar disorder a few years back. She is not on any medication (never has been), she constantlly has mood swings & cannot control her temper. We haven't spoke for a long time (years actually) because of this.

My question: Is this really all due to the fact that she is bipolar? It's hard for me to understand why she acts the way she does.

If any of you are bipolar or know anyone that is or are simply more educated on this matter, i'd really like to here from you, thanks!

I'm bipolar and I agree with baby girl. It is hard to manage this disorder without medication - but it is possible to take some responsibility for her actions and apologize if she hurts you or anyone else. In the heat of the moment we may not know what we're doing, but afterwards it's pretty clear.

She needs to be on meds. Her behaviour is most likely to be due to her mood swings.. I can treat people terribly if I'm hypomanic and irritated, or even if I'm just depressed and want someone to blame.

yes, its all related to the fact that she's bipolar. Its a chemical imbalance in your brain, which is why you need medications...and still, even while on medications, some people arent completely under control. However, I hope she doesnt use being bipolar as an excuse for her acting any way she wants to.

your sister should definately be on medications.  there are so many different types out there that could help stabilize her moods, help control her anger, etc.  however, meds don't "cure" her symptoms.  therapy would also be beneficial to her.  as long as she is not on medications these behaviors will persist, so you need to take care of yourself as well.  do you know why she won't take any meds?  and, how old is she?  please know that bipolar disorder is a serious illness, yet the symptoms can be controlled with proper treatment.  good luck to you.
