  1. When using a sewing machine to do this i have always used shirring elastic in the bobbin and normal thread on the top of the machine.

I usually use 2 pieces of fabric that when sewn together are wide enough to be able to walk and sit comfortably in and give me the shirred (smocked) effect that i want and then work several rows of shirring around the bodice part of the dress starting at approx 1cm from top hem and 1cm apart.

You have to make sure that the fabric you are going to use is not too heavy or thick or this shirring method will not work

  2. Handcock Fabric has the Smocking for dress by the yard , all you have to do is sew up one seam and add straps if you choose and your done ;)))

This is what "true" "smocking" is for those of you  who are to young to know or remember...LOL ...there is no elastic used in "true" smocking....but I guess these days they are calling smocked dresses anything that is gathered or shirred...

Many fabric stores like joann's carry the fabric which I will refer to as sundress material. You add a seam and add straps if you want them then  hem to length...this is usually sold by the inch but I know walmart sells it by the yard..the material is cut railroad style....and yes these are very easy to do...If you want to make "your own" then you would use the fine elastic in the bobbin only and regular thread on top to "shirr" the fabric ..hope this helps.....
