Question:

Question about spring snow conditions?

I was wondering what is a good spring temperature for snow to be ridable? I'm new to the sport and I'm not familiar with winter conditions and climate trends...

When the high is in the low 50s the snow here turns into slushy goop at around 12:30 PM and riding on it is really difficult and not very enjoyable, which makes it seems like a waste of money and gas to me... I'm still a somewhat of beginner, I know how to ride fast on conditions right between the groomed ice in the morning and the goop in the afternoon...

The forecast for Sunday calls for a cloudy high of 42 degrees. Is that low enough for the snow to be ridable all day?

  1. take your board in & ask for spring wax...it'll make your board faster (& safer) in the slushy conditions.  also ask for some graphite mixed in...also a good time of year for a base grind.

  2. Spring is a c**p shoot. Depending on the sun, the overnight temps, rain, and make-up of the base it can range from slush to sweet corn. It will change throughout the day and vary from place to place on the mountain.

The best thing to do is to just watch the ski reports and the weather. Skiing/riding in spring conditions can be difficult and tiring for the experts. Someone like yourself may tire out more quickly and not have the best day on the slopes. But, if you can learn how to work your board or planks in the spring you'll gain a lot of experience for the future.

    Good Luck!

  3. Anything above 40 is going to melt and be slushy.

  4. what is wrong with riding in warm spring conditions?  its so much fun!

Learn how to ride in warm spring conditions, once you get it down, you'll love it.
