Question about stuck garbage disposer?

A small spoon with a ceramic handle fell into the garbage disposal,and it is stuck.I have used the allen wrench to try to dislodge it,but it won't budge.Can the disposer be taken apart to remove the spoon?Do I need to disconnect the water?Help!!

  1. If it's really wedged in there, you'll have to remove the disposal completely in order to get the spoon out.  More important than disconnecting the water is disconnecting the electricity!  You could get hurt if you don't do that.

    If you still have the manufacturer's instructions for installing the disposal, refer to those to get it out.  Once you have it out, you'll be able to tell if you can get the spoon out or if the disposal has been damaged so badly that you'll need a new one (probably not).  Either way, once you install a disposal (new or old), you're back in business.


  2. turn off the power. Then look under the sink. There is a silver slip ring that will be right under the sink above the disposer. Take a s***w diver and twist that until it discontects your disposer from the sink. Now you will have good access to the inner workings.

  3. first you will have to disconnect it from the p-trap. now unplug the disposer. there is a locking nut at the top of the disposer under the sink. turn this and be careful the disposer will try to fall. now take out the spoon and your fixed
