Question about subs and amps easy question for experts?

im totally confuse i dont under stand how the amp works with the sub like i think if a sub 800 watt sub the amp needs to be at least 1000 to 1500 watts to power the sub like is that right like sumbody show me a site for dummys or explain it all to me thanks

  1. The speaker / subs has to be GREATER than the amp.

    simple as that

The speakers power handling does NOT have to be higher then the output of the amp.  As long as the two are in the general area you'll be fine.  But you're also ok running a lot less power to a sub.  For instance, if your sub has 2,000 watts painted on the dust cap, you'll be fine running 500 watts to it.  You DO NOT have to run all the power to a sub that it can handle.  A corvette can drive 160 mph, that doesn't mean you have to drive it at that speed.  In fact, you'll probably never drive it at that speed.  The power rating for subs and other speakers works the same way.  All that number means is, that's the maximum number of watts you can SAFELY run to the sub.  That's all.
