Question:

Question about sugar?

So I'm thinking about becoming vegan and I was looking on peta's "I can't believe vegan!" page. And they say that you can eat some cereals, but most of them have sugar in them. So I'm asking what's your stand on eating sugar in cereal?

  1. I don't think vegans should worry about foods that contain sugar. Some sugar is processed with bone char, but so is much municipal water.

Personal purity is an unattainable goal, and it shouldn't be the focus of veganism (in my opinion). I think vegans should just focus on the products that cause the most suffering - meat, eggs, and dairy. Avoiding sugar doesn't save any animals and it just makes veganism look impossible, discouraging other people from giving it a try. This hurts animals.

  2. When I buy large bags of sugar I buy organic, raw, etc. (no animal bone char) but when I buy boxed food I don't usually mind if sugar is an ingredient.  There's no way to know if they used the bone char-filtered sugar or natural sugar.

If you are so inclined, just avoid packaged foods with sugar altogether.  Although this can be extremely difficult.
