Question about surrogate motherhood?

I watched Baby Mama today and it brought up an interesting discussion between my husband and I. If you haven't seen the movie then read my brief description below. It does contain spoilers so I am warning you beforehand. Please don't complain to me about it.

**Baby mama is a comedian centered around a single mother who tries to get pregnant and can't. She hires a surrogate mother to foster her embryos and go through pregnancy for her but later in the movie the surrogate mother suggested to the main character that the baby actually wasn't hers and says she plans on keeping the baby. The main character takes the surrogate to court to try and determine who is the mother and who has legal rights to the child.**

Do you think the increasing use of surrogate mothers will result in the need for maternity testing? Do you think the increased use of surrogate mother's is a disadvantage to the poor women who usually choose to take on these jobs?

  1. ok...If this is done correctly a contract is signed before the surrogate mother every gets pregnant.  Where she gives up ALL rights to child. No if and or buts.

Which means the S mom...cant go after the child and the Paying mom...cant just give the child back.  doesn't work that way.

Have I ever seen this go bad...no, never seen this or heard of it in real life. know it happens but very few people do this.  Most take fertility drugs and if that doesn't work...adopt.

  2. I currently am a surrogate mother.  Its Great!  Its not just for poor mothers, its for those who want to help someone who cant have a family of their own.  Prior to anything getting started both parties meet and come up with a legal agreement.  No one has to be worried about the baby not having a home.  Most cases, family's who have been wanting a child so badly are happy even if they have special needs.  Legal rights of the child are given to the intended parents immediately after birth,  And by using an egg Donner you don't have to worry as much of the "attachment".  You can't just turn around and say " never mind I'm keeping the baby"  Its nothing like adoption, everything is made legal in the contract prior to birth. Its really a great experience.

  3. Yes, I think there is a very real risk for unwanted children. As the movie "Baby Mama" pointed out, this is a prime opportunity for fraud. In the movie, the surrogate was only pretending to be pregnant so she and her boyfriend could collect the money. As it turned out, she actually did become pregnant but by her boyfriend. Do you think the adoptive mother would have wanted the child under those circumstances? She had no biological link to that child. Another problem I see is in regard to a surrogate mother case I read about a while back. A couple had hired a woman to be a surrogate mother for them. She conceived twins but the couple only wanted one of the babies. Imagine how that child the couple rejected will feel when he or she is old enough to understand.

  4. Look up (Google) the court case from 20 years or more ago called  "Baby  M".

It is the basis for many states outlawing surrogacy, or mandating  psych evals for those who wish to be one.

  5. I feel that surrogate motherhood has no point. Why should we do this when there are millions of poor little children needing adoption and help? I'm sorry if I didn't answer the q, but I feel that it's just totally uncessary.
