Question about teaching math/general teaching?

I would like to go back to school to become a teacher, most likely a math teacher. I have always excelled in this subject in school and college, etc.. However, I have forgotten everything. I guess if you don't use it you lose it. I do remember the basic things and work with number know, but on the accounting end of things. Question is do you think it is still a smart idea to go for math, if I have forgotten things. Are there any other teachers out there that had a similar dillema.

  1. You can relearn what you forgot.  If you have a passion for it, then go for it.

  2. I've taught Math for 23 years at the junior high level.  I took Calculus in high school, and I remember very little because I just don't use it.  I also forgot a lot about trigonometry until it started to work its way into advanced eighth grade math books.  You'll be surprised how quickly you will remember things that you thought were long forgotten.  Our brains really do have our memory tucked away in little files, and it's amazing how just a little math you haven't seen for awhile brings a lightbulb above your head :)

  3. If you like math and are good at it, go for it.  Math teachers are always in demand especially if you are willing to teach at the high school or junior high level.  You'll pick it up again on your own, and if not, your university will make you take enough math courses that you will be forced to learn it all again.

  4. I"ll be entering the teaching field soon.  And I'm facing the same delima as you.  However, I would suggest you flip open your old math book and see if you do any random problems?  even if you can't, just read the section teaching you how, and you'll be amazed how quickly you pick it up again. Since you already know it, but maybe just forgot a small part about it.  As long as you knew it before, you'll have no problem relearning it the 2nd time quick.   Definitely teach what you like to teach, if it's math, brush up on it and off you go!

    good luck.
