I'm a college student and a future teacher. I'm majoring in Secondary Education in Social Studies. I went into college feeling so excited and ready to make a change in people's lives. I had a wonderful teacher in high school that inspired me so much but I feel so unsure now. I have a couple of years left in college and I've talked to people who have negative thoughts about the public education system in America. I just want to ask people who teach or who have taught at one time and I just want to know is teaching really worth it? Is it a career worth chasing after?

  1. Yes, it is worth it.  There are pros and cons to any profession and teaching is hard work.  Secondary students are hard to teach because of their ages and developmental stages.  You've got to deal with adolescent hormones, social issues, etc... the regular stuff teenagers have to deal with BUT you do reach those kids who are interested in what you have to say, come back to visit you, and say "thank you", "you were the one who didn't give up on me", or "you my favorite teacher because you took an interest in me."  When you get comments like that, it makes the negatives weigh a little less and you actually feel that you made a difference.
