Question:

Question about teething and weaning?

How old was your little one when you started to wean? How old were they when they started to teeth? My son is just shy of 7 months old and definitely teething, over the past couple days he's had a decrease in appetite (still plenty of wet diapers so I know he's hydrated), and has a fussier time at night then usual. He wakes up during the night now which is something he hasn't done since he was 6 weeks old. Anyway, some girlfriends were telling me that they started weaning their little ones around the same age, when their little one's teeth came in. Is that accurate? Should I do that? Also, how do you feel about teething tablets? It was recommended to me that I buy some, but do you feel like they're safe? Any advice is appreciated.

  1. Teething tablets are homeopathic and perfectly safe.  I use them for my daughter all the time.  I also give her Tylenol sometimes when they are really really hurting her.  Sometimes babies develop a low-grade fever when they're teething, so Tylenol helps lower that a bit, too.

Your friends are wrong about weaning during teething.  There is no reason for it whatsoever, and really babies need breastmilk for their entire first 12 months of life (at LEAST).  Here is a link to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) so you can read their breastfeeding recommendations: http://www.aap.org/advocacy/releases/feb...

My daughter started teething at 5 months, and now at 9 1/2 months she has 8 teeth and she is still breastfeeding.  Don't worry, once he gets through the next few days he'll regain interest in breastfeeding and he'll pick his old routines and behaviors right back up.  When my daughter is teething it usually lasts about a week.  Good luck!

  2. well my daughter is bottle fed and she already has two teeth. a friend of mine used teething tablets and they were not effective go out and get some baby orajel

  3. Tempera, or Infant Tylenol work great! My daughter would never use any teething toys. I don't know anything about weaning! I couldn't produce enough milk, so I had to supplement with formula. I would keep breast feeding, unless you're afraid of getting bitten. gl
