Am I right in thinking that all telemarketers have to have public numbers these days? (As in, not private numbers). Im in NSW, not sure about other states.

I have had two calls the last few days telling me ive been randomly chosen to win a free mobile phone (randomly chosen twice? thats clever) and the telemarketer doesnt state their business name, has a private number and besides which, im on the DO NOT CALL list.....caller is a hoax?

  1. We put an ad in a magazine a few years ago, advertising our workplace. Since then, we have had numerous of these *telemarketers* call us. It's hard because My boss & I have pat ownerships. We got caught once, losing about $750, never again.

Best Advice I can give you is hang up. It isn't worth the hassle. When they do call with a number, report it to the Do Not Call register.

I don't believe nothing any more.

  2. Yes they are breaking the law on both counts there. They must have a public number and they aren't allowed to call you if your on the DNC register, assuming you have been on it for more than 30 days. Get as much information about them as you can and report them to crime stoppers.

  3. I assume you are listed on the government anti telemarketing list.  If not [and for anyone else in Oz who hates those pestering calls] it is found here...

    http://www.donotcall.gov.au

It certainly works after about a month, and certainly filters out the vast majority of the nuisance calls..

Is your caller a hoax?  Quite possibly, although the government donotcall list doesn't stop every call, but stops about 95% I'd say.  It's a vast improvement.  It sounds like it could be a hoax doesn't it?  Have you tried calling them back? Don't commit to anything at all, but try to find out what they want, and their telephone number, then report them to "donotcall"
