me and my friend want to try out for tennis. we've only played in p.e.

we know the rules of how to play and how the scoring works. we just need to work on our skills a little. so we were just wondering how you know how there are tennis practices in high school...are those before tryouts or do u have to make the team first?

  1. often times they have captains practices before the season (where the captains run the practice, by state high school law, the coach can't interact with you before the season starts)

tryouts are always before practice (with the exception of captains practice)

What they keep saying at our school is that the summer is the time for you to get better and once the season starts, all they are there to do is refine the skills

I'd go out and hit as much as you can, find a camp or two, go to captains practice as much as you can

    good luck!

*edit* i found it really helpful to take a lesson or two from someone who knows what they're doing to make sure your mechanics are solid

even the smallest change can yield big benefits

  2. It varies by school, some schools don't even have tryouts, if you show up you make the team

tryouts are to determine who is on the team, the team is who practices.

To find out about practices (both official and unofficial) contact the coach he/she can tell you

  3. There are tons are different type of tryouts depending on the coach or captain. I have experience two type of try-out because out old coach got promoted.

My first coach try-out was simple, he is looking for talent and skills. He makes 4 days of try-out for each grade. He would make you play short match, best out of 3. He would examine you style of tennis to see if you could replace some of the old doubles player or if you are better in singles. He a weird coach with his own style. He hates people whom slices (under spin, drop shot) so some of the people whom tryout know this but one person didn't. He was good enough to play single 2 for double 1 but he slice a lot so he didn't make it. I though it was awkward.

My recent coach is also the girls tennis team's coach, so I stay to watch my friends try-out. He was a coach that think stamina is the key. He make try-out 2 days long but all of the contestant are on the same day. His try-out you need to be able to run a mile within his time limit. That knock a lot of people out. Then he'll would make them rally on the courts and walk pass watching each one. If he thinks you're not good enough, he would tell you straight forwards to leave. If he unsure or think you're interesting, he will tell you to have a short match with someone whom he already plan to make it on it the team. He won't tell you if you made it or not until the end of the second day of pratice.

Good luck on your try-out, hope I was able to help.
