Would a Selmer Prelude Bb Tenor Saxophone Model TS701 for about $1200 be a good investment? Does anyone know the quality of this sax?

  1. The Prelude is a student model sax manufactured by Conn-Selmer USA. It is basically an economical copy of the professional Selmer horns, but for the price there were obviously some corners cut. For that price, you could probably get your hands on a pro-Yamaha which would more or less retain its value while in your care. A student horn is rather undesirable for anyone other than students, so if you were to sell it you would most likely not get what you want for it.

Selmer's old student model is the Bundy, and you can now find these is remarkable condition for around $500. This will eventually happen with the Prelude as well.

If you want a real investment, get a professional or at least an intermediate model. If you want the Selmer - I have played Selmer for 9 years now and LOVE them - then keep looking around and you can most likely find a used Prelude for a better price. $1200 is reasonable for a brand new instrument.

    Good luck!

  2. I am a saxophone player myself. I guess that it would just depend on the condition of the saxophone. If it is brand new then yes it is a really good investment but if its used then look more into it and find out how it actually sounds. If your looking for used instruments then you can find cheaper and better.
