Question:

Question about textbook swap?

I swapped books with a student and she now says that it isn't the right book! I thought she was sure but apparently she was wrong. When we swapped I paid the difference. I know that the book she gave me is the right one therefore I'm keeping it. If she doesn't need the book I gav her should I pay the cost of it now? It was a lot of money. Is there another way to work this out?

  1. Well, technically its her fault but you have to understand how she feels also.

You have to do the generous thing of giving back her money and getting back your book that she doesn't need. That's the most generous and good sign of any human being in this world and that is to understand other's feelings.

She'll thank you very much, and even if she doesn't, you'll feel good you did the right thing.

    Hope this helps

  2. The problem is not yours, it's hers. You did a legitimate transaction (in essence you bartered). Say you bartered for a commodity that was consumable and the commodity no longer existed, are you expected to replace it because she asked for the wrong thing? Was there a return policy in your agreement? I doubt it. She should have been more careful in making sure she got exactly what she needed but it isn't your problem, but her mistake. She should try to resell the book she has as best she can. You did not mislead her in any way and your transaction with her is over.

If you want to be nice you can offer her what the going rate is on a used book in the bookstore but I would do no more than that.

  3. Go back to square one...ie swap back the books and get back the difference from her.

  4. If she doesn't need your book, take it back. Give her any money she gave you for it, if she did. She cant go back on her deal with you though. Just take your book back and pay the full price of the book she gave you. Like if your buying it from her. Just tell her "Im sorry for the mixup, but I really need the book you gave me. I will buy it from you and pay the rest of the book."

  5. I think you owe her a refund.  If the bookstore sold you a book you didn't need or the class isn't using would you want your money back?  I think you need to pay the difference to her and get your old book back and try selling it somewhere else, sounds like they are not using it at your school but others might still be.  Try Amazon.com to sell it.  Hopefully you both have learned from this and check for yours and the other persons next time so you don't end up in an awkward situation like this again.
