  1. Man Utd's victory last season has nothing to do with the Premier League having three direct entries into next season's Champions League.

UEFA are making radical changes to the Champions League beginning with the 2009-10 campaign.

The reason for the changes is to give the league champions from the middle-to-lower ranked leagues a better opportunity to qualify for the Champions League group stages.

The clubs that are losing out in this scenario are the 4th placed clubs of the top three leagues (England, Spain, Italy) along with the 3rd placed clubs from the next tier of leagues (Germany, France, Holland, Portugal) who will have a tougher road to the Group Stage as they, along with the non-champions from the leagues ranked 7-15 by UEFA, will have to face off against each other in order to quaify.

For example, in this season's 3rd Qualifying Round the toughest matchup is by far Schalke (GER) v Atletico Madrid (SPA).

In 2009/10 we'll be seeing more tough matchups like this in the 3rd Qualifying Round. So, for example, if Liverpool and Fiorentina again finish in 4th place in their domestic leagues this season, there's a good chance they could be paired together in the 3rd Qualifying Round, meaning one of them will miss out on the Group Stages.

At the same time, teams from the middle-lower leagues will be paired against each other for spots in the Group Stages.

Again, the reason for this is to give teams from the middle to lower ranked leagues a better opportunity to qualify for the Group Stages and, thus, gain a share of the millions of €uros on offer in the tournament.

The hope is that the gap between the bigger and smaller leagues will be narrowed, creating more competativeness throughout the continent and quality not confined exclusively among 3-5 leagues.

Check out the link to UEFA's website that I've provided for the full details.
