Question about the Aran Islands?

I'm an American working on learning the basics of the Irish language, and I want to--eventually--go to an Irish speaking place for a little while.

I'm not aware of any University programs that allow students to go anywhere except the main cities.

Does anyone know the best way to go about staying in the Aran Islands for several months? (I'm assuming I'm going to run into several problems with getting permanent lodging since I'm an American citizen.)
