Question:

Question about the Blue Girl Holly ?

I planted a Blue Girl Holly the other day. Reading the attached card the tip states, "For good fruit production, plant a male variety nearby."

Will the Blue Girl Holly not get any berries if there is not a male variety? And if I do get a male variety, how close should it be planted to the Blue Girl Holly?

  1. If you want holly berries, you do need both the Girl and a Boy.  They should be planted fairly close together for good pollination.

  2. Any of the "Blue" males will pollinate your Blue Girl...Blue Baron, Blue Prince, Blue Boy, etc.

They can be across the yard from each other - even around the corner.  The pollinators (bees and such) just need to visit both plants on the same trip.  The closer you plant them, the more sure you'll have good pollination.  But even 30, or 50 feet apart can work well.
