does the eye clean itself naturally?

as in if you get a piece of sediment in there will the eye like take it out by itself or something?

how?

  1. Yes.  The majority of foreign objects that come in contact with the eye are removed by a combination of tearing, blinking, and encapsulation with mucous.  I have seen some foreign objects, though, that become imbedded or adhered (such as a something with a concave shape like a seed coating) that the eye is not able to remove.  In these situations, the immune system comes into play and attempts to wall off the foreign object and form a granuloma around the object.
