I'm trying to apply to college and I'm extremely interested in becoming a psychiatrist, but I have a few questions.

1) I haven't found any type of psychiatry major. Do you major in psychology first or pre-med?? I know that psychiatrists prescribe medications, so that's why I thought maybe you'd need pre-med. What do you major in to be a psychiatrist??

2) How long do you go to college and intern??

3) Salary.com said that the average salary for a psychiatrist is about $200,000. Is that true??

thanks so much for your help!!!

  1. In order to become a psychiatrist, you must go to medical school, like all the other MD's, including your family doctor. To get into medical school you have to be quite smart, have a high G.P.A, and score high on the MCAT (intense testing over the sciences; physics, inorganice chemistry, organic chemistry, and biological sciences. Sometimes even doing well on both, does not guarantee a position. Generally less than 5% of applicants get into medical school.

In order to be elligible to apply for med school you must have a bachelors degree, but it does not matter what you're major was in. However you do have to take 40 credit hours of the science and they will be intense because they are intended to weed people out. So yes, a psych major would be fine but you will also need to meet your science requirements and they are generally the same for every school; physics, chem , o chem, and biology.. someitmes calculus.

    Bachelors; min of 4 years

    med school;4 years

    residency; min of 4 yhears

yea, 200k is about right. psychiatrists are among the lowest paid physicians

You need to be more informed. I would suggest reading books about getting into medical school as well as reading info regarding the statistics to the school u are interested in.

    good luck

  2. You have to realize that Psychiatry is based on the word "Psych" meaning spirit. Psychiatry denies any spiritual side of man. This to me would be a warning as they cannot define their own terms and must be pretty confused themselves. Psychiatry originated from Professor Wundt in Leipzig, Germany. He very techniques have been used by the likes of Hitler and other infamous people to mind control others. This is the very same technique that is used by Osama Ben Laden to "train" suicidal bombers. Go see who Ben Laden's right hand man is - right a psychiatrist. There is nothing spiritual about Psychiatry as they treat people with the idea that they have a chemical imbalance of their brain so prescribe mind altering drugs to alter their behavior. Most of their drugs in fact reduce the size of  the brain and cause brain damage. If you want to see some of the effect psychiatry have had on society go check out who's behind the school shootings - yes mind altering drugs prescribed by psychs. The kids were not suicidal killers till they met up with the real cause of society's downfall - the psychs and their terrible drugs they inflict on people in the name of help.

Find a real job that you can be proud of and be a benefit to society. I wish you the best

  3. 1.  You should go to school for pre-med and take a lot of classes in anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, psychology, microbiology, pathology, etc.

    2.  You will need 4 years of undergrad school, 4 years of medical school and then at least 3 years in an internship.  (but probably more).

    3.  Salary.com is usually overly inflated so don't go by that.  Go for a job you know you will love first and foremost.  Also realize you will be working 60+ hours for the rest of your life (including the school to get you there).  It is very demanding work and you will have very little free time.
