On what basis was it assumed that the hieroglyphic symbols represented the same thing as the Greek text? Scholars were able to read and understand Greek, but is it possible that the hieroglyphs actually stand for something absolutely different?

i think its possible..but we should also remember where the stone was found,location of the stone and also its mineral components.

Well i think that so many hieroglyphs have been translated and make sense and not just random words and phrases, that it must be safe to assume the original translation was correct.

Also remember that although the Rosetta stone was the most value translation tool discovered, it was not the only one and smaller discoveries have confirmed the translations.

As previously stated, the Rosetta stone contained text in three languages, two of which were known and said the identical thing.   It is reasonable to assume that the egyptian hieroglyphics also matched to the same text.

This was confirmed as proper names, which are written in cartouches in hieroglyphics, matched to the proper names in the Greek.   This made the assumption that it was the same text in 3 languages more reasonable.

The text of the Rosetta Stone was a decree of a new law enacted by the Pharaoh of the time.  It was written in the languages of the people of the time so that all of them could understand the law.  Here is the actual translation of the stone.

There are 3 languages on the Rosetta Stone. Two of them were known and they both said the same thing, so they fitted it out that the heiroglyphics said the same thing.
