  1. it stands for grand contenders, or men that are favored to win the overall race.  see not all riders are concerned about winning the race, only stages or supporting teammates.

  2. GC is General Classification  The leader of the GC wears the yellow jersey.  And is awarded to the person with the overall lowest time.  In a nutshell its the guy who takes the least time to ride the entire race.    There are also other jerseys, the Green jersey is for points.  Points are giving during mid stage sprints and finishes.  The green jersey is often called "the sprinter's jersey"   The polka-dot jersey is the "King of the Mountain" jersey, similar to the green jersey its scored on points, however these points are on climbs.   The last is the White Jersey who is given to the best young rider (determined by overall time)   The rider has to be under 25.

A rider can hold more than one jersey, however in that case, the second closest rider would hold the next lower jersey.. For instance if you have the yellow and green, you would wear only the yellow and the next closest person in points would wear green.

  3. i was just wondering the same thing i think it means something in french

  4. JPeeling and Doug are correct.

    It stands for General Classification.

    .

  5. General Classification, basically the overall standings. For example: 'Cadel Evans is the current GC leader', 'Menchov is a GC contender'.

  6. GC stands for General Category. There are specialists who sprint. They usually dislike climbing. There are climbers, and guess what? They hate sprinting. Then there are people who can keep close to the sprinters and the climbers. These are the people who will probably win the overall victory by having the lowest overall time. These are the Lance Armstrong types.
