i noticed in the first movie, during his fight with Apollo, Rocky asks to have his closed eye cut open with a razor

(gross) so he can see. did this really happen in prize fights back in the 70's?

  1. "CUT ME, MICK!"

  2. This practice was done back in the 50s.  I think Sly got the eye from a Rocky Graziano fight but I am not 100% sure.

It doesn't happen much any more because by cutting the swollen eye, it creates an open cut which can worsen during the fight.  And it also leaves a scar which can be vulnerable to open in future fights.

But it did look cool for the movie.  "Cut me, Mick!  Cut Me!"

  3. dont know but i liked the movie

  4. true, this is a practice during old times, dont know if they are still doing this today. a job by the cutman, they even pluck the eyelashes when the eyelids are deformed and curling backwards into the eyes which is very uncomfortable.

  5. If it was me, and I knew I had a surgeon in my corner I'd have asked him to sow on another arm to hit Apollo with!

  6. yeah it did happen and still does today,

an upside is that it releases any swelling

but downsides are in the region of you are now dealing with an open wound.

  7. Yea it did and still does if your eye gets to swollen

  8. An old time boxing thing. They used fix-its that would make you shake just thinking of them. Anything to get the poor slob back on his feet. Still used today? Maybe in jurisdictions that don't care about such things, amateur boxing. illegal bouts, mixed fighting, etc.

  9. it still happens now
