I saw a documentary about the USS Nimitz and I saw not one porthole.Do any of the crew members get to go outside and see the light of day ?I know that's not the case on a submarine, but i'm talking about an Aircraft Carrier.I do know that the people that are on the flight deck will aways see the light of day.Is it the same thing on the Destroyers,Cruisers, and Frigates ?

  1. My last tour was on the Nimitz CVN-68 (1984-85 on the east coast...Med cruise March - October 85).  At sea, we worked a MINIMUM of 12 hour days (0700 to 1900), 7 days a week.  I remember once there was a rumor that there was a sun.  I worked 2 decks below the hanger deck, so I wasn't sure if the rumor was true or not.

  2. On CRUDES (Destroyers, Cruisers, Frigates), you are allowed to go outside most of the time, assuming it is safe to do so (weather or specific operations may prevent it at times).  It's fairly easy on these small ships.   On larger ships like carriers, it's harder because non-essential personnel can't be on the flight deck during flight ops, but it can be done.

  3. <<< Plankowner USS Harry S Truman CVN-75 >>>

Spent many years on various carriers - six on my last CVN75 and there are many times when you can go topside or as stated to vulture row or on the fan tail or the foscile and see the light of day. In fact sometimes we secure flight ops and have steel beach picnics.  I did the maiden deployment on the Truman and we had the B string of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders onboard and had a superbowl party in the hangar bay!!!

Where there is a will there is a way... spent many months on DDG, DD, and CG's I agree it is much easier to get out to see the light of day but you also do a lot more rockin & rollin...

The Discovery Channel also did a special on the Truman too - while I was onboard.

  4. Yes, they  are all able to go up on deck and get some sunlight.  They don't live inside for their entire time at sea.

  5. yes you can go outside. there are many hatches to access to go outside. you can even go to the island to a place called vultures row and watch the aircraft take off.
