Question about topical corticosteroids?

what exactly are corticosteroids? i know they are suppose to be similar to some sort of hormone in our body. but what hormone? and what function does that hormone produce in our body? does that hormone affect our body? i would appreciate it so much if some one could enlighten me with this. it is bugging me a lot =[

Corticosteroids are steroid hormones produced by the adrenal cortex.  The term is usually used to refer to glucocorticoids such as cortisol, which would usually be used topically to relieve some sort of inflammation.  In our body, corticosteroids regulate glucose metabolism, immune system function, and fluid homeostasis.
