Question:

Question about toric contacts and looking in the mirror?

I have a strong toric contact lense prescription (vision is 20/2300 uncorrected, 20/10-20/15 with contacts, 20/15 with glasses). Why does it seem that everything looks so much bigger in the mirror when I have my contacts on than when I wear my glasses? It's almost like when I look in the mirror with my glasses on, I look relatively slim, but when I have my contacts on, it's like I look at least five sizes bigger!!! My husband looks the same way. Is it because I have a very strong toric lense prescription?

  1. Not knowing your prescription I would really not know very much how you are being corrected. Your visiual accuities do not tell us really all that much. I am assuming you have Myopic astigmatism. With your glasses on you might see things a bit minified, it is true. Contacts are thinner so light moves through them differently and they are also closer to your eye, so you might see things larger, which is actually their real size. Most people do not notice the differences becuae the brain tends to accomodate for this and we just ignore it. I hope you get used to it. I am not sure that it would be the cylinder in your toric lens to correct for your astigmatism as you did not list your powers! Have a happy!

  2. I also have a toric prescription with no spherical correction.  It is PL -1.25 X60.  My eyeglasses prescription is a little stronger at PL -1.5 X50.  I only wear a contact in my left eye.  It only makes objects appear clear to me especially distance objects.  I have never noticed a magnifying effect.  My right eye has normal vision so I can compare it to the vision in my right eye.

My roommate also wears torics.  He described something similar to what you did when he uses the computer.  His prescription is -2.50 -1.25 X180.  I assumed it was the spherical correction for his myopia that caused the effect since we both have the same amount in cylinder correction and I do not experience the same effect.

    I hope this helps.
