  1. Yes it is true. I study plant biology at University. Its best to cut the stem at an angle and place in it luke warm water that you have dyed with food colouring. The die will travel up the stem by capillary action and the coloured water will fill the plants vacuoles in the cells and stain the flower. Transversely, if you take a white rose that has been dyed blue for example and place it into clear water, the water in the vase will turn blue and the flower will turn back to almost its natural white.

  2. Give it a try!  Actually yes they will take on color, but maybe not as much as you expected.  Of course the flowers must be fresh and you cannot let air bubbles enter the stem, so...if possible, hold the stem under water and cut it.  It's tricky.  Florists have developed knacks for being able to transfer a stem with a water droplet on the stem end to stop the bubble.

Dilute food coloring, warm water, not hot and put the flowers in a cool, not cold location.

A new trend is to split the stems in a certain way and put them into separate colored waters.  Talk about a weird flower!  Very expensive from the florist!!!!!
