Question:

Question about turning at intersections? I'm a new driver.?

My driver's license test is tomorrow and even though I feel pretty prepared, there are two things I am unsure about:

1. What exactly am I supposed to do at an unprotected left hand turn if I'm the first person in line? If I'm not the first? Or if there is lots of traffic? If there is no traffic at all? Please be as detailed as possible!

2. Also, I'm looking at the driver's manual handbook right now and it mentions that when making left or right hand turns, I am supposed to look over my shoulder before stopping behind the limit line. Are people really supposed to do this? I've never seen anyone look over their shoulder before stopping.

Thanks so much in advance!

  1. If there's no traffic just check mirror, indicate left, slow down to about15mph,and turn left. If there's risk of collision with oncoming traffic, however, stop before the give-way line and wait.

    2. If you're about to turn you would normally check your mirror, indicate, and check your blind spot(shoulder check),before you started to position your car left or right.

There could be a cyclist or someone you don't notice in the mirror just behind your shoulder if you just veer over without looking.  All the best in your test.

  2. 1. do not wait in the intersection instead wait behind the markers until the turn is clear, waiting in the intersection is dangerous and you can fail.

    2. that does not sound right but I would do what the handbook states...

  3. 1. first go full stop then look for stop light, if none;

    a. if ur the first, then go first.

    b. if ur not the first, wait ur turn, try look for the cars before you.

    c. if there's no traffic at all? just make a full stop then go when its clear.

    2. i'm not really sure but common sense tell me that before you stick something out make sure its safe and wont' hit something/anything..

    goodluck on your test....

  4. for the 2nd question, no one really does look over there shoulder but for the drivers test i would, or u got docked  a bunch of points

  5. Ok #2 first....

Everything really depends on the Examiner giving your test. they are all human.. and all different.. I have driven and failed auto.. and drove the same exact way and gotten -0.. it depends on the examiner.....  I dont know where you are but at least in ohio..

you must check over your shoulder when changing lanes.. if you dont that is considered an unsafe action and you will be failed.

I dont know about looking over your shoulder at turns... but I do know you have to stop. look. then creep forward and stop again at a point where you are supposed to be able to see 200 feet in either direction without being in the road.  then decide at that point if it is safe to turn or not.  if you are at a right hand turn at a red light and there is no sign that says no turn on red... make sure you turn if its safe... because waiting to exit a driveway for too long.. or waiting too long to make a turn is -5 points in or maybe its -3.. you fail at -21.

Hmm #1. unprotected? I dont understand. unprotected... hmm

if you check your manual.. you should see a series of pictures on how to turn... HOW is a matter of what type of street you are turning from.. to what type of street you are turning to...

for example.. a 4 lane to a 2 lane one way...

or a 2 lane one way.. to a 2 lane both way street.  and what not.   Usually its.. to turn left you have to be in the leftmost lane

that heads in the direction you are going....  then when you turn left.. you turn to the leftmost lane that is heads in the direction you are going.  or ... if there are 2 left turn lanes... or even 1.. another way to say it is... basically.. stay in your respective lane throughout the turn.  changing lanes in the middle of an intersection... (going straight.. or while turning) might be an auto fail.. classified under. unsafe action.

WHEN  is another matter.... 1st and foremost.. obey the traffic signs/lights...  lets say its a 4 way stop... and 2 cars show up at the same time.... (and its just those 2 cars.) the one to the right goes first I do believe. (or has the right away)

if you stop first at the 4 way stop. you go first....

now lets say.. you are the only car there... stop at the line.

look both ways... and if you decide its safe to turn. turn.

now lets say theres a line of cars coming from each direction...  and you are 2nd in line... when the car infront of you goes... thats when the car opposite (across the intersection from them) goes.. now if 1 is turning.. or both even.. if they are both turning left... they arent supposed to turn until they pass each other in the intersection...

but lets say the car infront of you is turning left.. and the car opposite them is turning right (your left).. the car opposite has the right away. and vice versa. if the car infront of you is turning right. and the other left (your right) the car infront of you has the right away.  the same applies to you. and the car opposite you as well.

and.. if you cant remember who has the right away... the best thing to do .. is wait... it can save you from getting hit. or hitting someone.  you might lose some points if you wait... but.. you will fail if you.. cut someone off.. turn infront of someone.. get hit.. or hit someone.

and at any intersection without a white line... make sure you stop at least a few feet from the stop sign... ..

and yield signs.. or blinking yellow lights. pay attention to those intersections and turns closely.... if you have the yield sign you can only go thru without stopping if there is no traffic crossing the intersection.. or turning  or coming. ( you MUST slow down before crossing or turning. regardless...) and if another car is going thru the intersection the yield sign or blinking yellow light is to be treated as a stop sign.
