Question:

Question about vegetables?

I am a vegan. My older brother tells me that most fruit and veg, including all apples, are sprayed with a waxy preserve made frm dead insects.

I don't believe this for a second. It couldn't be true. The vegan society would know about it and there would be an uproar for sure.

That said, there must be some truth in it.

Does anybody kow what he's talking about?

  1. He's trying to wind you up, love. Though it's true that a lot of fruit is treated with preservatives, some tested on animals :-(

If you're in a position to buy organic, so much the better. If not, then wash all fruit before eating.

Check with the Vegan Society, as the position could always change. And remember - you're doing the world a lot of good by being vegan. It's not always possible to get it 100% right 100% of the time, but it's a d**n sight better than eating burgers.

    Enjoy!

  2. Your Brother's A Liar.

    No Offense Big Bro!

  3. Apples used to be coated with wax to preserve freshness.  This wax was non-toxic, but supposed to be washed off.  I don't know if they still do this.  I do know it was never made of insects.  You brother is a weiner.

Your best bet is to just always wash you fruits and vegetables before you eat them.  You should wash them anyways though in case the person who picked them had dirty hands.

  4. "...there must be some truth in it."

Well, no, just because your brother says so doesn't make it truth in whole or part.

  5. A lot of store bought fruits that have any long term storage, shipping, or dessication issues is waxed, occationally shellaced. Shell-lac is edible but with all the other natural waxes I can't imagine it being used if a choice is available, but it is. It comes from a beetle whose shells are dissolved and pressed into buttons for furniture and wood coatings. I would think it is mixed with other waxes to make a thin flavorless coating.

  6. no and try at least to eat meat

  7. Nope, absolute rubbish. :P

  8. its probably nonsencre ignore him ask your parents they should know

  9. Contrary to what most have said here, your brother is at least partly correct. Shellac is made from insect secretions and most are not harmed.

"Fruits and vegetables in the produce aisle of your favorite grocery store are coated with shellac and wax to make them shiny and eye-catching."

  10. Your brother is just doing what brothers do best trying to irritate you......LOL  no truth to it at all...

  11. some farmers do spray their  fruits and vegetables with preservatives, but they are definitely not made of dead animals. they put chemicals like sodium oxide on them to PREVENT bugs from getting on them. If you still don't trust me buy organic fruits and vegetables, they are guaranteed to have no preservatives or wax coverings.  good luck

  12. What rubbish! Your brother mght have been just teasing you, I think so at least.

  13. it is true that apples and other fruits are sprayed with preserves but they are not made out of dead insects. he is probably just saying that to scare you the perserves re sprayed on the fruit to protect the fruits from any inscets and to keep the fruit from aging to quickly.

  14. Pesticides and preservatives are a huge problem. Most fruit and vegetables have a count of 72 pesticides in and on them. That's correct -- in the flesh of the food itself! What is more, the FDA in its infinite wisdom has mandated that the fresh produce in the supermarkets be sprayed with more of them right in front of our eyes and noses! ('Singing in the rain. . . '  -- To lock in freshness and preserve nutrients -- In a pigs eye!) That is why the Organic products are now wrapped in cellophane and plastic boxes. Not good for the landfill but definitely better for you and me!

So buy organic. Eat Organic. The organics are also non-GMO and that is a very good thing!
