What is the common tradition here in States in regards of relatives to bring a little something when they stop by to visit their grandchildren or nephew/niece?

I grew up in Russia, where if I go visit somebody like a friend or relative I must bring something with me. Lets say, if Im visiting a frined, I know we'll be drinking tea, so I will get some cookies or something sweet. If Im visiting a nephew - I will bring a little toy or fruits.

  1. buy a cake  simple and done

  2. bring a favorite food item..usually one picks something up at the store or make something quick..

  3. Here the rules are a bit more lenient and can vary in different areas of the country.  And from family to family.  Mostly it wouldn't be a major faux pas to show up empty handed but it does make you look very good if you do show up with something.
