Question:

Question about vitamins and herbal supplements?

I am currently on Nicoderm patch step 1 to quit smoking. I've had to cut down on coffee to help with quitting smoking, and also to lessen my generalized anxiety disorder. Because of GAD, I have changed my diet to one higher in magnesium, drink St. John's Wort tea 4 times per day, and take a multivitamin, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C in the mornings. I would also like to take a B-Complex vitamin about mid-day when my multi has probably been metabolized. Does anyone know if this is an overload of supplements or if anything in that list would have bad reactions/side effects? Also, do you think that a whey protein shake would be ok to add to the daily routine? Thanks.

  2. This should be fine but ask your Dr. to be sure.  But you know your body better than any Dr. can.  Do more research to be sure.

The only thing that concernes me a little is the number of times you are taking a St. John's Wort tea.  Four times seems like a lot to me.  I would cut this back to about two.  Or instead of tea, try a tincture.  That way you would be getting the alcohol soluable and water soluable components in the herb instead of the water soluable in just tea.  I would still only take this about twice a day though.  Usually 300mg a day is what people say to take.

A whey protein would be fine to add.  Just look for one that is free of artificial preservatives, additives, sweetners, etc.

  3. I buy a lot of products from this website, and looked at what type of supplements they have in their "smoking" remedy...hopefully it will help answer your question.

It might also be easier to take one pill like they have there, instead of taking a ton of different things.

The nice thing about natural vitamins is that those not used by your body, are usually eliminated in your urine, so its very hard to overload your system on something unless you do it intentionally.

  4. That doesn't sound like an overload at all, for what you're trying to do. The B-complex vitamins are VERY important for nerve health and if you've been smoking & drinking coffee, you are probably running in the negative. Same with the C.

You want to watch out for anything that is oil-based, like the vitamin E. Those are stored in the liver and you don't want to overload. Usually start out taking just 100 IU and gradually work up to 400 IU over about 3 months.

If you need help when you go off the patch, check out a product by Herbs, Etc. called "Smoke Free." The herbs in it really help w/ nervousness and sugar cravings. Download a brochure about it here: http://www.herbsetc.com/Topics/PDF/smoke...

Nothing wrong with whey protein shake but read the ingredients - some brands add lots of vitamins and maybe even Ginseng to "energy" type or meal replacement protein drinks.
