Question:

Question about volleyball?

This is pretty much a question where opinions are more useful, and I doubt that this question has a real answer.

So in volleyball, would it be better to fall and either use your kneepads, dive, or fall on your butt then hit the ball, or would it be better to move to the ball?

For me, it helps to do the first. Fall on my butt and hit the ball, use my kneepads, or dive because I can keep my form while doing those, plus it's faster for me. And it isn't a problem for me to get up in time to get out of the way of my teammates or anything because all you have to do is roll :) I learned in camp this rolling technique to get up quickly, and we also did a lot of drills for falling on your butt.

Moving quickly to the area...that kind of messes up my form, and i have horrible estimation of where the ball will land so the ball usually ends up hitting near my elbows :/ Any advice on how to estimate or move quicker?

Thanks in advance!

  1. i do either automatically, but usually i move then fall to my knees, i have more control that way

  2. it would be better to move to the ball, because if you dive or fall on your butt you won't be lined up as good to make a more accurate pass. and if it lands on your elbows take a step back before it hits your arms. and if you need help moving your feet go to a speed and agility training camp.

  3. yea it ias difficult to figure out exactly where you will contact the ball on a scramble play. But i prefer the second choice (so does my university coach) if you can becuase you have a strong base and it is easier to make more solid contact. However there are many times when you have no chocie but to dive or do the roll. On a scramble play or a play where you are diving it doesn't really matter how well you make contact, it is just important that you make some contact to get the ball up, perfection is not expected all the time.

the only way i can think of being a better estimator is getting better at reading a play. If you know your defensive position well and know where you have to be in certain situations you will start to find yourself in the right spot and dont need to move. But it is almost impossible to figure out a ball coming off the block, then it is all reaction time

    good luck

  4. One drill that will help you learn to move to the ball and not fall is: have people serve at you and move to the ball like you are going to pass it but let it bounce between your legs. When you do it correctly it's called "laying an egg" It helps you get to the ball quickly, learn to move your feet, and helps you learn just where the ball should hit your arms.

Hope this helps. It's always better to try and not fall. You could get injured and your team needs you! Play smart!

  5. You never want to fall on your knees, falling on your butt would be kind of hard getting the ball to where you want it to go, and you only want to dive if that is the last and final option. Always keep your eye on the ball.

You really just need to continue to practice. You always want your hands a part until you are ready make contact and always have your weight on your toes and not on your heels to sustain balance. You always want to pass the ball with the flat part of your arms (between your wrists and your elbows) for the most control. Never your hands, until you get to a higher level of skill and know how to control the ball. Also, I know of the roll very well, and I am not sure what you mean by landing on your butt.

It is always really important to be taught skills correctly the first time because once you get into a bad habit, it can be very hard to break. I have played, taught, and coached for years and it frustrates me when "instructors" teach their students bad form, or habits that should never be learned in the first place. I always teach my girls correct form regardless of age.

If you really want to get involved into competitive volleyball, join your school team, or a club team. Even if you are just entering into a HS team, they will welcome you and teach you- just stay dedicated and keep working at it.

Volleyball is a great sport and keep playing hard!
