When determining the volume of an object, in what situation would water displacement be the preferable method over direct measuring and in what situation would direct measuring be the preferable method over water displacement?

  1. well it depends upon the nature of the object they are size, chemical composition(affinity to water) etc.

    usually water displacement is not preffered instead the relation of density, weight and volume is preferred...

If you have regularly shaped object (sphere, cube, right circular cylinder, etc) it is easy to measure the dimensions and do the calculation.  If you have an irregular shape, making measurements and doing calculation is more difficult.  Doing Archimedes method seems straight forward but there are ways to include error in it as well.
