Do restaurants usually hire their current hostesses as waitresses after age 18, or is there a good chance to get hired as a waitress without previous experience?

  1. Waiting tables is an art. It really is. Anyone can do it, but only a select few can do it well. It can really help getting a job as a hostess or bussing tables or even washing dishes (it's not as bad as it sounds! It shows you're a hard worker and willing to do what it takes to get to the "top" and can be pretty fun back there in the kitchen too!). That way you are observing first hand how the business works and will have a slight advantage. And once you're into a place in one of these positions, you're keen to when a serving position will open up before it's advertised and you can talk about moving up with your employer.

It's not necessarily 18 and older, but once you're out of high school it's more desirable because you can work more hours and don't have the school/homework/extra curricular commitment

  2. Previous experience is better but some restaurants will hire their current hostesses for servers providing the business is aware that you are interested.

  3. yes. some of our hostesses become servers. and some do both. it's better to be cross- trained, managers can rely on you to fill in for either position if needed.

are you sure you want to be a server after reading some of these rude  a** questions & anwers about not tipping?

  4. YES

that is a sure fire way of getting a job as a server as soon as you turn 18.

    edit

18 with no experience ,.......it's going to be tough ,to get a job serving, right off the bat.

  5. at almost all the places I worked at they almost never bump the hostesses to servers....and you can get hired as a server with out experience...I mean hey you gotta get experience somewhere

  6. Most restaurants( those that serve liquor) require that you're 18.  I started my first server job in a mom and pop place that didn't have beer/wine, etc...  that's the best way to go unless you decide to start hosting first and then move into a server job at the same restaurant.
