When i was on holiday this year in Menorca i noticed there wernt any wasps around the bins and when i did see a wasp it just flew by me minding it's own business. Why do the ones in this country swarm round bins and chase you? I hate them here, they're a total nuisance and im terrified of them! Does anyone know why the difference in behaviour?

  1. Wasps have a very peculiar life. They collect a type of nectar from the flowers, but they can't eat it themselves. They bring the nectar back to the nest and feed it to the wasp larvae (babies). The larvae digest the nectar and give out another substance that the adult wasps can eat. So the wasps have no need for the stuff from bins. This is what you saw in Menorca.

But late in the summer, (in the UK, it is in August) the queen stops laying eggs, and the larvae grow up into adults. There are now no larvae so there is nobody to make food for the adults. They go mad with hunger and go out looking for anything sweet they can find. It's not enough, though, and they eventually all die, leaving only the queen, who has her own supply of food and can survive until next year.
