OK, I know gold can be resized. But are there any other metals that they make rings out of these days that you CAN'T have resized? Like Tungsten, Titanium, Silver, Brass, Steel, etc...

I'm kind of shopping around for my fiance's wedding band and want to know just in case I'm looking at something then I KNOW I must buy in his size because it can't be resized or if I'm safe to buy any size because it can be resized...

Thanks!!! :)

  1. not sure about platinum, or white gold

ask the jeweler, he or she might know about those things

  2. U kow, gold cant ALWAYS be resized.....If the ring has a style then its impossile. For ex. my hubbys ring has 8 diamonds going around the band. And EVERY jewler we went to said the same thing.....That because of the style it was impossible.

  3. unless he works with his hands a lot then gold would be find and can be resized!

tungesten carbide wont scratch but cant be changed for size.

  4. Most "hard" metals (tungsten, titanium, platnium) can't be resized.  But neither can bands that have any sort of design.

My husband has a bevel and milling around the edge of his band.   It couldn't be resized for that reason.  BUT...

If you go to a good, reputable jewelry shop, they will exchange the ring for you at no charge if you need a new size.  It takes about a week.  So ask about that when you are shopping.

    Hope that eases your worries!

  5. You can buy ring sizers cheap on eBay, and size his finger, or sneak and compare it to a ring that he already wears.

  6. Tungsten is a VERY BAD IDEA for a ring. Quite unsafe if you're in an accident. (and not at all sizable).

  7. Don't overlook the fact that even if you get the right size for him now, some people's fingers change size over the years. Usually it's due to weight change; occasionally to other things like injury to the finger.  Most simple plain rings (except tungsten and ceramic) can be made smaller by removing material and re-soldering or welding.  Many metal rings (except tungsten) can be made larger by adding material or stretching or grinding inside or a combination.  Even titanium can be resized despite misconceptions.  For a wedding ring, get something durable: titanium, platinum, 14k gold .  If you go with tungsten, buy from a dealer who has a lifetime exchange.  Don't get brass, silver, or high karat (18-22k) gold--they won't hold up over the years.

  8. I know brass can't be resized.

More importantly is the styling.  If you have a channel ring, it usually can't be resized.  Engraved rings often cannot be resized without damaging the design.  Easy wear bands also are difficult to resize nicely, I'm told. You can tell an easy wear ring because it will have a smaller inset inside the ring.
