Question about window stays?

I live in an old house and am doing some remodeling....to keep with the character of the house I would like to install some window stays (as opposed to cranks) I have never seen how they work with a window and am just trying to understand (visually) how it works. Can anyone tell me how to know what size to get in relation to the window? What about photos - can anyone provide me with photos of a window held open with a window stay?

It's difficult to show you a picture or give you an example because the window stays are built on each side of the window casing.

Might I suggest that you go to your Home Improvement store and ask them to explain it to you.
