  1. The display of the wireless connection speed only measures the connection between the wireless card and router. The wireless card and the router can communicate at 54Mbps; This however has absolutely nothing to do with your internet connection's speed.

It's kind of like sitting at the dinner table with a giant plate, but still getting your allotted serving. Sure your plate can fit a 64 oz's worth of steak, but you're only getting the 8oz you paid for.

54Mbps is plenty enough since most consumer level internet service (FiOS only goes to 20) don't even come close. But it's capable of it so that if speeds increase in the future, you are good to go.

If you want to find out your real speed on your internet, try the speakeasy speed test:

  2. 54 Mbps is the bandwidth between your laptop and the Wireless router.

6Mbps is the bandwidth beetween your Wireless router and your internet provider.

You won't be able to use more than 6Mbps for internet access from your laptop, but you can use up to 54 Mbps for local network access (local network game, file transfer between 2 laptops, printing , etcc....).

  3. The connection speed that you are seeing on the lower right portion of your computer screen is the maximum speed that your computer's wireless card can achieve. However, the connection speed in a wireless type of connection varies and is also fluctuating unlike a cable/DSL type. One good thing is that sometimes a wireless connection could provide a higher speed depending on the network traffic. If you'd like to check your computer's present connection speed, you may contact AT&T and ask them a favor regarding your current Internet connection speed and settings.

  4. It does not makes a difference he just , maybe has a different modem "router" If you have att at 6 mb that's the connection to the internet , the 300 mbps is between you and the router "the network" from outside your network you will still be at 6 mbps . Your router is a 54mb G router he might have a N router  ..

  5. If you have the 2Wire wireless/modem/router, its wireless is 54 Mbps.  I was not aware of 300 Mbps wireless, but that would likely only be if used with compatible Dlink router.

It would not matter for internet access anyway since your wireless is way faster than your internet speed which is probably just over 5 Mbps (about 85% of sync speed) due to PPPoE or ATM overhead.  I get same DSL test speeds whether wired or wireless to the 2Wire.

Maybe your friend has the base modem with separate Dlink router.  Wireless speed does not mean his DSL is as fast as yours.

  6. Because the speed between your wireless connection and your internet router is 54Mbps.
