ok so i'm pretty dumb about this stuff, i want to get a laptop and have it wireless, i read that you need like a portal so you can move freely about this house, i'm just wondering if this portal just works with your laptop or if it works with any laptop, and say if you go to somebody elses house, could you use their portal or could you bring your own? just wondering cos i live in two different towns.

thanks and sorry!

  1. I believe you are talking about a wireless router. If you leave unsecured then anyone can use it but if you secure it then you need a password to access it. If you go to someones house who has a router you need a password if its secure but if it isn't anyone can use it. I wouldn't recommend bringing a router from house to house because you would have to change the settings every time.

  2. Hi, the thing you're referring to is called a wireless router.

If you have broadband, you'll either connect your computer to it with a modem (often via USB connection) or with a box called a router. Either way, it can be replaced with a wireless router.

With a laptop that has built-in wireless networking - and that's most sold in the past two years, and also higher spec/more expensive models before that, you can connect to a wireless router.

If the wireless router is your own, or belongs to a friend, your laptop can be given a password to connect to it. You'll also find some free connections in public places - and some others that you have to pay to use.
