Question about wireless networks.?

I am building a computer to be put in my room. I have got everything along the lines of parts set up, but I have a question about connecting to the internet. I have 2 options available to me- 1.) I buy a wireless network adapter and connect to my houses WiFi. (I get full strength from my Iphone in my room) 2.) Buy a wired router and run it along the wall in my room to connect to a phone jack.

So basically, my question is, should i connect to my wireless network, or can i just hook a router up to the phone jack and be good 2 go?

  1. You said phone jack. It may be a simple typo...but you should have broadband access if you want to use a router.

If you have high speed internet, go wireless. Its more convenient for what your trying to do.

  2. This is morally based on your personal preference. If you don't have a problem with putting a little extra work to hardwire your computer into your room, then I say go for it. But if you want to make things just as good but more simpler, you may want to go to a wireless solution. What you would do then is set up the router in one room and then put in a desktop wireless card for the computer that you are building. Just make sure that while you are setting up your router that you enable some sort of security on it to prevent unauthorized users from connecting to your network and potentially causing problems with your computer. An advantage to wired (LAN) connections is that you have the option to take advantage of gigabit Ethernet ports, allowing a faster bandwidth/data transfer rate between your computer and the router. An advantage to wireless (WLAN / WiFi) is that if you ever plan to rearrange your room, there are no network cables to reroute in your room. Just move your computer and be done with it; how simple. Another advantage to a wireless connection is that if you ever plan to get a laptop or build another desktop computer for another room in the house, all you need to do is make sure you have the proper hardware for the wireless connection, assign settings to each computer, and connect. Its that simple. There is the basics of home networking in a nutshell. Whichever you choose, I wish you the best of luck!

Good Luck. Hope this helps. Email me for more assistance.

  3. I would suggest go with a wired network, because you can take advantage of gigabite ports, but if routing wires is too complex for you, wireless wouldn't hurt as well.
