Question:

Question about work in the UK?

I'm an Australian who also has Irish citizenship. My long time girlfriend and I are moving over that way soon. We're not sure if we want to set up in Ireland or Scotland. If we get married I know that my she will be able to stay and work in Ireland, but what about the UK? If we're married in Ireland, will it allow us to live and work in Edinburgh (a friend of mine can get me work there quite easily I'm told). Any help would be great thanks!

  1. I know that you will be able to work in the UK because all Irish citizens can, however, with her, it is going to get complicated.

I would advise that you try and see an immigration attorney or immigration expert before you leave so that he can explain to you what would need to be filed, and what restrictions she would have moving around in the EU.

I guess another option would be for her applying for a UK work permit on her own accord.

  2. Make sure its Northern Ireland not Republic of Ireland. As ROI is a completley seperate country

  3. Since Ireland and the UK are both within the EU, then an Irish citizen can legally live and work within the UK.

If your girlfriend has an Irish visa, then I doubt she'll be allowed to work in Scotland. If she got Irish citizenship she probably would be able to, but I can't comment on how to do that. It's different than gaining British citizenship.

If I were you, I'd go and talk to someone within the Irish embassy. I don't know which part of Australia you're in, but you can find an embassy on this page http://www.dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=543... or this page http://www.ireland.embassy.gov.au/ is about Australians in Ireland. They might know too.

    Good luck!
