Question:

Question about year-round schools?

I did not put this in Education and Reference because I wanted to speak to parents with experience on this subject.

My family and I are moving to an area with year round schools and it seems that the better of the schools in this county ARE year round versus 9 month schools. It is Clark County, NV.

Does anyone have experience with year round schools? How does the schedule work? Do the kids get any time off for breaks or vacation? If any parents out there transitioned their children from 9 month schools to year round schools, were they well adjusted?

Any information, tips or advice is greatly welcome!!!

Their grades for the 2008-2009 season will be 1st and 3rd grade.

Thanks again~

  1. I went to one growing up and depending on how they do the breaks, they either just extend already set breaks like thanksgiving, christmas, spring, and a short summer with some other breaks scattered in. At mine, we went to school for three months and then got one month off. We still had a short thanksgiving, christmas, and summer break. I really prefer this to 9 month traditional schools and I have done both.

  2. In Australia, school goes from January to December, with a 2 week holiday around the months of of March, July, and October. There is also a 6 week holiday from mid December to the end of January. The children complete one grade over the course of the calendar year.

  3. You will get longer breaks during the holidays, plus you are going to have breaks in every season as well.  If your family takes vacations you don't have to wait only for summer.  What they have found with going to a year round system is that kids were more prepared to enter the next grade level since on a traditional schedule the first month back to school is review because kids forget a lot during their summer break.  The next thing was there were less absences since a family had breaks all thoughout the year rather than all at once.  It wasn't hard for us to go to a year round schedule because of the breaks being scattered, but when our district went back to the traditional it was actually harder, plus you don't spend that last month of summer with bored kids either.

They should have all your children on the same schedule, our school district did that with the families with kids in different schools so that the families didn't have all their kids off at different times.

  4. My daughter went to year round school from kindergarten through fourth and she loved it. It gave her an opportunity for more frequent breaks and she was able to have continous education without having to review or cram things in. Plus, you can vacation in the off season without taking your kids out of school. Most daycares and camps in your area will cater to the year round school schedule, so, you shouldn't have issues with childcare or break times.

Our school had what is referred as three "tracks" (scheduled times). Each track would start one month after each other and follow a 60/20 (two months of school/four weeks off) schedule.

    Blue track: start in July

    In session: July-August, October-November, January-February, April-May

Off track: September, December, March, and June

Once you get used to it, you'll love it!

  5. the school vacation is broken up into smaller blocks over the year vs one 3 month break.  there are more pros than cons to year round school.  talk to the local school district for more info.

  6. Everyone here who has the yr round schools loves it.  The school yr starts in mid July and there is a break in Oct.  A week off at Thanksgiving, two weeks or more at Christmas, two or three weeks in the spring, and six weeks in the summer.  The kids retain what they learned a lot better.  The schools even have projects/trips the kids can do over the summer break if they want.  There are also scattered days off/half days throughout the year.

  7. i think is is like every 6 wks you get a 2 wk break
