Pitching is a scarce commodity and the Dodgers felt they needed another arm for the division chase.

they traded basically nothing for him and he was really only picked up for this post season push which will help the dodgers due to the fact he has experience (helping younger pitchers such as kershaw), and penny is going to be out for a while.
