  1. It isn't really a good idea. It is very expensive, and a lot of work. Breeding can be very hard, because they are hard to get rid of, for the price you want them for. Again, as i said before, you have to pay for lots of things, such as grooming, vets, and food.

I suggest that you do not start breeding, because there are so many homeless dogs out there. There is no need to add to them. It is your choice, at the end.

Good Luck if you decide to do so!

  2. Breeding dogs only for money is a puppy mill

Breeders are only supposed to breed to help improve the breed of dog!

"buy a lot of land, breed a lot of dogs" = full blown puppy mill

  3. With genetic testing, vet visits, testing puppies, emergency c-sections, food bills...GOOD BREEDERS LOSE MONEY EVERY LITTER THEY BREED. Its true, the best breeders do not make a profit off their dogs. Most pups average about $2000 in pre and post-natal care, and they only sell them for about $500-$800. Breeding and showing is a hobby to them and of course hobbies take money. Only puppy mills and bad breeders make money, because they don't give the mother dogs or the pups any vet care and they house and feed them the cheapest way possible.

  4. Puppy Mill.

  5. Breeding alot of dogs on a big peice of land may not be a puppy mill, but it sure would be a back yard breeder. I only agree with breeding if it is to improve a breed, not to make money. You bearly make any..if at all maybe a little. Backyard breeders are just adding to population problem and are causing more dogs to die in shelters. Want some money. GET A JOB! Want to breed something, breed fihs. Its very fun, i do it! And you actually get some profit!!

  6. whats up with people these days, their automatic answer is always, "NO DONT BREED YOUR DOG ITS BAD AND OVERPOPULATING"

it truly depends on the person. are you experienced? are you planning to take the pups out yourself or have a vet do it, becuase it can cost some money. will you be able to provide them with vaccination when theyre 2-5 weeks old? and when will you sell them off?

people shouldnt say no all the time. it really depends.

but trust me, its a lot of work

  7. The first thing you need to do is decide what breed of dog you are interested in breeding. Do not breed mixed breed or designer puppies. If someone wants a mixed breed puppy they need to look for a shelter or rescue dog. After you find a breed that you fancy join your local breed club. There are people there that can help educate you about what the breed standard is supposed to mean and how to go about finding the proper dogs for a breeding program. You will find that people who breed dogs for the right reasons rarely make money on a litter of puppies. There are several financial considerations such as, health clearances on the dogs that you want to breed ($500-$1000 min), quality food and care for your breeding dog (at least $100 a month min.), researching stud dogs and paying a stud fee (whatever your time is worth plus the stud fee), progesterone testing (at least$180 per breeding), pregnancy ultra sound ($100 min). So now you have invested over $3000 and you still may not even have any puppies to sell. If your ***** is pregnant you have to buy or build a whelping box and whelping supplies (you can figure a minimum of $300 to $500 for that). If your ***** needs a c-section that will be another $600 minimum. When the puppies come they will need vet care as well as your ***** within 24 hours of birth. Many breeds need to have the puppies dew claws removed at the age of about 3 day, that is another vet bill. Then you have to feed all the little mouths when they are weaned. There is also the consideration of are you willing to keep any puppy that you breed that has health problems, because it would not be right to place a puppy like that and are you willing to be responsible and take any dog you breed back from the home you place it in if the owner no longer can or wants to keep the dog.

The best thing to do is educate yourself. If you can a still want to breed dogs good luck to you. It is a great responsibility but if you do things the right way it can be very rewarding.

  8. No, you don't make good money. If you're doing everything correctly, you often don't make money period.

    .

  9. when you buy a lot of land and have a lot of dogs, you are a Puppy mill. Most breeders only have only 1 or 2 females and a few males. A GOOD BREEDER doesnt overload themselves with dogs and puppies. Puppies must be properly socialized. If you are a GOOD BREEDER you dont make money. IF you want to make money you get a purebred show dog MALE and you win every show you possibly can, and then Westminster. Then you charge a 1000$ for stud service. Thats the way to make money. IF you breed dogs for profit again you are a puppy mill. There are enough breeders and enough dogs in the world I suggest you find a different way to make money.

ILOVELEXY.... read this question do you think this person is truly capable of breeding quality dogs??? Do you think getting a piece of land and breeding any ole dog is responsible? DO you think breeding dogs for money is a responsible question. IF this person posed the question differently like . "Whats the BEST way to BREED QUALITY animals and still make a profit"... then I think they would get a different answer. This person hasn't a clue what they are doing, WHY SHOULD WE give him any other kind of answer. Besides look at my source material. DO YOU think I am going to answer: YEAHHH SURE PLEASE MAKE MORE DOGS THAT ARE c**p SO YOU CAN PROFIT... sheesh ... maybe you need to look at what your advising.

YOUR not getting our point. You have to spend time with each and every dog, not just a PACK and some time here and there walking them.

  10. Responsible breeders make no money. It's not a job. Responsible breeders do it because they love the breed, love dogs, and want to help improve the breed. They're not in it for the money.

A lot of land + A lot of breeding dogs = puppy mill

You can NOT say you won't make a puppy mill, or at the very least an irresponsible backyard breeder, when this is what it will turn out to be. I'm really hoping you're joking about this. You have no business breeding. Leave it to people who are breeding for the right reasons, and not just to make money.

  11. Lets say you choose to breed rotweilers. You need to get two puppios... NOT BROTHER AND SISTER! and raise them... they need all their shots... they need training... they need to be on premium food. and they should be about 2 before you let the first litter. So by now... with the two im estimating about 2000 plus depending on where they came from. they should be papered when you buy them or i would not use them to breed.... then the food is about 50 or 60 a bag... so lets say 2 bags a month cause once they are older they will eat atleast that much. 1440 a year in food. then the vet is like 30 a visit... shots vary so we could say they it is about 2000 in vet bills by the time they are 2 (with out having a sickness or being hurt... that could cost more then that)  They need to be registered by the county... that is 50 a year to register one... so...you have 2 so that is 200 by the time they are 2. then since you plan to breed them... you need a kennel... and a license if you plan to have more then one litter. those vary but where i am itis about 100 a year... if you meet the standards there is no fines... or you do as they want... Then... the cost of the materials. there is no way to say how much they cost...we could just say 200 cause we dont know. but you will need blankets... a welping box (these are wooden and they need to be big enough to walk around in and one side needs a heat source) I would not think that making a welping box could very well cost you no less then 200 and the heater could be some heat lamps... those are 10 each and then the bulb is about 15.99 i would say you need atleast 3. so 75 for the heat source.

Lemme add it up. I have not thought of everything im sure. this WITH OUT the emergency vet bills... and the emergency c section cause she cant push one out... the vet care of the pregnant mommy... the extra food cost cause puppies need to be weaned into a food... the vet cost cause it is your job to do the dewclaws the tail and makesure they are current on shots... taking the puppies to the vet to be sure they are not sick. You will have the puppies till they are least 2 months old... i have added about 7000. If you have 7 puppies and they all make it and are healthy and everything works out perfectly (which it does not all the time) with out thinking about the other things i listed that i did not calculate in... you should break even. assuming you sell them both for 1000. sadly, males only would sell for 950. males are cheaper then females... not sure why.

SO... to answer you... NO you dont make good money. you almost break even if things happen with out emergencies and nothing is wrong. moredogs more shots... food... clean up... vet bills. lets say they fight... repair work...

I just dont think it is a good idea!

  12. Well either way. You may be  treating them kindly, and caring for them, but breeders don't MAKE money, they spend it. This might be long, but hear me out.

A reputable breeder will show their dogs and try to win champion titles. Then other breeders come to them. A reputable breeder only breeds one breed of dog, not multiple breeds and they only breed their dogs once or twice a year. They have show dogs, and get them all genetically tested, and have good results from the OFA.

What you will be owning, if you do this, IS a puppymill of sorts. If you don't like that word, then it's a very large lot of land where puppies are produced by the masses. A puppy mill has mutiple breeds of dogs so that the b*****s pop out the puppies and those evil people can make money selling to those pet shops. A puppymill doesn't get their sire and dam (the parents of the pups) tested for anything and they breed their dogs everytime they are in heat.

That is what you will end up doing and that is what we as dog lovers can see in your description, even if you say you don't want to be a puppymiller, your description says otherwise. Even if you exercise the dogs and they are healthy, you have to win show titles to prove your dogs are to standard. Other wise you are just a puppymiller, and if no, a Backyard breeder, which is just as worse.

Even if you do this, if you want to be responsible about it like you say, and become a reputable breeder like the people who show their dogs and do everything to ensure they are making the breed better, you will not be making any money. And that is the answer to your question.

No, you won't make money if you want to be responsible about it like you say.

I think that you should take a second thought to this, and choose something that will benefit the animal world, not make it worse from the looks of it.

Maybe you can start a shelter on that land instead, and help the millions of Homeless animals.

Responsible breeders are not in it for a profit but more for the betterment of the breed.

EDIT: I don't care how much time you spend with the dogs. If you don't breed for the betterment of the breed and are only in it for profit you are an irresponsible breeder-aka as back yard breeder or puppy mill.

  14. if all you care about is money, then no, don't breed your dogs.

and second, no, dog breeders end up spending thousands of dollars on vet bills and stuff. If money is number one thing on your mind, then you shouldn't breed.

  15. No, you never make money if you want to be a responsible breeder.  If you think breeding dogs bring good money, that's not the right concept.  Although you take good care of your dog, this kind of massive breeding still considered as puppy mill.  A lot of responsible breeders have full time job to support of their hobby.  Please don't choose this path.
