one of the beauty's of 45acp is its initial diameter. You do not have to rely on expansion to open up a wound channel large enough so that it will not close back up and restrict bleeding.

You may gain a little bit of penetration with a +p round, but you are going to gain some recoil and muzzle flash, which translates into lost controllability.

This being said, my personal recommendation is standard Remington 230gr round nose bullets. They are inexpensive and you get to train with what you carry, which is one of the most important factors.

You can rest assured if you do your part and land a standard 230gr 45 acp in center mass, the fight will come to an abrupt end.

Every thunderstick has certain loads it prefers over others; it is just a fact of life.  With a 45 acp forget about most powerful and other buzz words, concentrate on what is the most accurate.  45 acp is designed to work within a certain range and velocity and yada; and it does its job admirably.  Don't try to achieve magnum velocities as it was not designed as a magnum (another buzz word)  or a shotgun or a rifle;  it is just the worlds best pistol caliber, period.

remember that "most powerful" doesn't equate to "best" load for the pistol. I think that Hornady TAP ammo is tops. I also really like Federal hydra shok ammo, but there are a lot of others that work very well.

Power=wear and tear.

too much power produces a heavy recoil which requires heavier recoil springs etc and effects accuracy. What are you looking to do with it? self defense? target? trying to hunt with it? more info would help with the answer.

The Remington Golden Saber +P Pushes a 185 gr round  1140fps for  534ft lbs.

You may find one with a couple of more fps and ft lbs like a Buffalo Bore or Core Bon load but you specified best along with powerful, and you specified for your XD and not a long barrel hunting pistol.

This round has  proven its accuracy shooting paper and its terminal  performance in the field for defense and hunting.
