Question for British people and other Europeans?

All the Europeans and Brits I've met generally like Americans, but on Yahoo Answers many seem to have negative opinions of Americans. Would you like an American just as much as anyone else if they were not fat, lazy, arrogant, and ignorant?

  1. You have to live in America to really get to know the people. People in Europe just have a picture in their mind what Americans are like.

I am from Europe and lived here for 30 years. I think Americans are generally kind and happy people but it depends what area you are in.

I do admit a lot of americans are overweight, but I knew fat and lazy people in Europe too. I've met many arrogant and ignorant but those kind of people can be found in Europe too. You cann't put a label on a person by nationality. Everyone has their own persona no matter where they live

  2. why'd you seclude the Brits? They're Europeans too. Are they so special they had to be singled out? Anyway I really don't care what Europeans think of Americans. If they're gonna judge a whole country based on the actions of a few...or maybe alot then their opinion isn't worth shytt to me.

  3. Im british and my girlfriend is american.

Remember that the people on the internet who says things like that are usually a vocal minority, people with strong views are the ones who are going to take the time to write them down on places like yahoo answers. There are also people who just like to start arguments. But the majority, who dont have any strong views one way or the other are the much less likely to bother to share them with others.

  4. I don't hate Americans and every American I've met seem nice.

It's the American government most of the world detest, and I reckon once Barack Obama is elected, the world will start liking you again.

The United States has painted a rather dull picture of itself over the last 10 years. The Police of the World and all that. It's just political. The British public blame the United States for pressuring the British Government to go into Iraq and Afghanistan.

    Britain isn't exactly popular either

  5. not at all!

but i have an answer to your question

    2 words: George Bush!

  6. It's difficult to like Americans these days.  They used to be a lot more interesting, but now they're spending all their time and money on killing people in the Middle East.  Not cool.  Not cool at all.

On the other hand, I've learnt that Canada has all those qualities I thought the U.S. did, even moreso.  For example, the most multicultural city in the world is Toronto.  It's a much more liberal society there.  Most of the people are quite friendly, and they aren't so obsessed with war and being macho.

  7. Everyones different I have a friend who was originally from New Jersey hes fat though lol but hes kool I dont hate him. Most people I know who dont like Americans just find them annoying cause they talk very loud and they think they are trying to say look at me im an American im better than you lol paranoia of people you see. But Americans are loud

  8. The United States is a dominant country in the world for a reason.  It is a nation of immigrants that receives the best from every country in the world.  Compared to European countries, just count the people trying to get in compared to those trying to get out.

  9. i love americans no matter if they don't like me (i'm french)

  10. dont blame americans, blame the republicans who voted bush who caused every country to hate us

  11. Its a stereotype. So far you have one that that we have negative views of Americans.

Everybody has them for another person even if the deny it.

Some good some bad but generally wrong

  12. I lived in the US for 6 years, and i love Americans, they are very warm, welcoming people. Here in spain people don't like americans just cuz they are jelous, and they are very closed people, they don't like strangers, and other lenguages, but personaly, God Bless America.

  13. yup, but they generally are

  14. I really believe that the what is going on in the world right now is a great cause for concern and yes, this has generated a lot of dislike from other peoples of the world toward the USA, which is not surprising given the way in which it has made itself felt around the world just lately.

Economic downturn, oil, gas, the list is endless - but no one country is the worlds police force - just an observation.

  15. Speaking as someone who's been to England a lot. I have to say, unfortunately, there are American tourists and expats who've given them a reason to write  us off.

I've been told they dislike [when] they encounter US citizens who give off the attitude that we are untouchable or #1. Quick to bring up the Marshall Plan, or how we 'saved' the U.K. We're often seen as rude and loud. While the rude part is a bit exaggerated, the loud part I can't really argue w/.

But generally, most people I've met from England want you to have a good time in their country. I've had a lot of people (even strangers) go out of their way to help me get around London. Even my first time there, the hostel owner didn't bug me about paying him upfront or throughout the week, and charged me less than I expected upon check out! (try that in North America).

  16. I only ever seem to meet them in European tourist spots, or restaurants, and they've always managed to irritate Me.

  17. ramones rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. yes of course. its not fair to judge an American just because they're American. And by the way I don't give in to that stereotype of them being fat, lazy, arrogant, and ignorant

  19. I like Americans. However, on Yahoo Answers, I find that many of them a rather pious, overly-sincere or just very rude.

Mind you, so is everyone else, so maybe it's not nationality but just how people are when they can speak freely online.

I think it's best not to categorise really.

  20. i dont mind americans...i just dont like the way they spell LOL

  21. I'm Irish but I don't dislike Americans! I think it's that people hate George Bush (for all the obvious reasons) & that opinion unfairly reflects on the rest of the nation.

Although I hate the American culture of suing people for the slightest thing! Grr!

Now ask me what I think of Brits?...that's a Nation to be despised!
